Status update: fall 2021

Since my last status update, I’ve spent about half my time working on Runaway and half working on an Android release.

In Runaway news, I’ve made important design decisions about how to load levels. While I’m proud of the design, it’s complicated enough that I’ll have to save it for a post with the technical tag.

I’m pleased to announce that after a difficult month, Run Mobile has been updated! On Android, at least. We made it with a few days to spare before Google’s November deadline, meaning that they won’t lock the app down.

Finally, I’m continuing to work on the story in the background. I have several cutscene scripts in the works – much like the one I released in June – but it turns out, it’s easier to start new ones than to sit down and finish them. Endings are hard!

Moving forward:

  • I may take a week or so to update some other Android libraries. The past month was less painful than expected, so I might as well get those updated before Google makes another big change to break my workflow. (Update: it took one day.)
  • I’ll get back to work on Run. Add Infinite Mode, adjust the physics, maybe do another pass on the animations.
  • I’ll start rebuilding Run 2 using Runaway.
  • Maybe I’ll even finish a cutscene script.

  1. Hello, it’s GoBo15 here. Do you remember me? Anyway, the suggestion of updates soon has drawn me back to the game at last, and this time I’m on the Android app. I wanted to ask a few things:

I don’t know if you’re aware, but the Android version has a mini version of the old troublesome bug from years back where you could unlock levels early through clicking on the achievements, though it’s exclusive to the achievements in the Way Onwards. You can only access the N-tunnel using this method I think, since you can only get to the levels through achievements – clicking on levels through the map treats them as though they aren’t unlocked yet and sends you to the Bridge Building.
Is there any chance of the Duplicator and Pastafarian’s prices on mobile being dropped as part of the update to Infinite Mode that you talked about? I completely understand why they’re more expensive, I only ask because I would not want to spend hours and hours slowly grinding Infinite Mode only to have the cost cut down massively later on.
Is the full Runaway implementation update likely to include any more gameplay, or just the new engine?
Thank you for continuing to develop the game. In my three years absence I have learnt a lot about programming (though still nowhere near enough I could make Run 3) and I definitely respect the slow development process much more than I did back then.

    1. For the new content question, I have a feeling it probably will, as player said he gave up on adding new content to Mobile with this update (which was supposed to be the mobile update with Runaway3D).

  2. Hello! How’s progress on rebuilding Run 2 with Runaway coming along? I know you’ve been busy with other things lately, but it would be great to play this classic game again. 😉 (Not trying to rush you or anything.)

  3. I’m just wondering, is there any chance that the new run remasters or installments could be abandon? I’m just asking because I haven’t seen any news about run 3 or run 2 lately.
